Like most people I adore a three layer homemade german chocolate cake and my best friend makes one that is absolutely amazing.  However, sometimes I just need a quick cake and so I break out the 9 x 13 pan and make a boxed German chocolate cake which incidentally comes out moist and tasty every time if you don’t over bake it.  Even though I will go for a box cake mix I never ever… not even do I think about using canned coconut pecan frosting.  The homemade version is delectable and so easy to make and when spread on a 9 x 13 cake it is nice and thick and just completely enticing!  In fact I have been known to make a recipe and a half just for extra icing.   After all it is about the icing isn’t it?

German Chocolate Cake – Easy Style
Recipe Type: Dessert
  • One Box German Chocolate Cake Mix – Prepared
  • Icing:
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks, beaten
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/3 cups coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  1. Cook milk, sugar, beaten egg yolks, butter and vanilla over medium until thick. (About 12 minutes)
  2. Remove from heat and stir in coconut and pecans. Cool. Spread on cake.

  1. I haven’t had a German chocolate cake in well, umm.. maybe 20 years! I love them and this is a great way to get my fix. 🙂
